  • Why the Internet?

In the last few years, the Internet has taken off like a rocket.

"...2002 rang up $47.98 Billion in online sales -- a 34% increase over 2001's total online sales of $35.87 Billion."
    Internet.com Retailing 2002 E-Commerce Wrap-up

Over half of the U.S. is now online with hundreds of thousands more users added per day.

Internet use is increasing for people regardless of income, education, age, race, ethnicity, or gender.

In the past, businesses were fairly hard to finance because of the physical requirements (possible store space, paper and printing needs, etc.) The Internet has changed this by offering affiliate programs, online storefronts, electronic books (e-books), and by putting thousands of free tools at everyone's fingertips.

Many people today still think in the old "brick-and-mortar" terms when it comes to financial independence. There will always be a place for regular, more "physical", businesses like these, but the Internet today makes things much more accessible to the average person.

How long would it take you to setup a store at a shopping mall in your neighborhood? Several months.

How long would it take you to setup an Internet mall that sells to the world? Several minutes. And never mind that the cost would be about 1000 times less. See my point?

At the bare minimum, you can begin an Internet business and begin advertising it without spending a single cent. That's right. It can be done, although your progress would be a lot slower than someone who actually decided to invest $25, or $100 into it. I recommend that you stay realistic about how much to invest. You can get started for $0, but if you're really expecting serious results, you'll have to advertise the way that every successful business does.

Here's a list of things that the Internet can provide for free:

  • Free Email Accounts
  • Free Website Space (0catch.com) (you can also get free domains, but I don't really recommend those)
  • Free Graphics (Animation Factory)
  • Free-to-join companies that PAY
  • Free Advertising
  • Free Statistical Counters
  • Free Ecommerce enablers

All the things above are discussed on this website. Its hard for the brick-and-mortar world to compete with starting up when you have all this power at your fingertips.
