  • Step 2 - Deciding on a Domain: (www.yourdomain.com)

A good amount of thought should go into a domain name. The domain sets the tone for your whole website. If you have a storefront with hundreds of product pages, the domain will be repeated throughout the storefront at the top of the page. This is your first chance to establish name-branding and a memory imprint of your website with the visitor.

Its very easy to fall in love with the first name you think of and buy it. Days or weeks later, you may wish that you had chosen another name.

Simple advice about chosing a domain name:

  • Keep it simple and easy to remember.

  • Some of the best names "tell something" about the website
    (what it is about).

  • Dot coms (.com) are still the most easy-to-remember domain names
(Even though the registrars are pushing .us and .biz hard)

  • Avoid dashes (-) and hard to remember spellings. Dashes should only be used in a domain name if you're experienced with search engine optimization techniques and want to include keywords in your domain. If you have a question about this, don't use dashes in your first domain name. You can always go back and get a second one later for optimization purposes.

  • Consider your chosen domain name well for a few days before buying it.

There are many domain registrars on the Internet. One of the most well-known is Register.com. However, they are expensive and may charge $39.95 for a .com domain name. There are several domain registrars that do it just as well for much less.
